History
It all started with Dr. José Cerqueira Dantas, who was looking for an event to enrich the cultural scene of the State of Piauí. With the help of Jota A, the first edition of the Salon took place in 2008. After years of hard work, creativity and passion we are coming to our 14th edition of the Salão de Humor. Over the years we were able to bring joy, laughter, and provoke thoughts to the people of Piaui, Brazil, and the world. We talked about health, sedentarism, communism, social networks, gossips, elections, envy, intolerance, marriage, flirting, narcissism, and now we will discuss freedom as our main theme, which is always a current, relevant theme, in sync with society.
An early success
As early as our first edition in 2008 we already knew Salão de Humor would be a huge success, and we were thrilled when on opening day we had the visit of a cartoonist who came from the State of Para just for the event. In the second year, we already paved our way globally and received the first international work, a drawing from England. If in our first year we had 250 works submitted, last year we’ve seen over 1,400 works from 41 different countries.
National Personalities
Salão de Humor took great pride in bringing to Teresina on opening day Baptistão and Fernandes, two of the greatest national caricaturists. They were members of the jury on the contest, and later also drew caricatures of the attendees.
Salãozinho
To create the kids’ contest was a big win for us. Working with kids we help develop their taste for comic drawings and we foment arts, culture, and a future breed of artists, who will surely compete in the main event in the future.
Touring exhibitions, lectures and courses
Salão de Humor is one of the few cultural events in Brazil that never stops. We work the full year calendar to not only run the contest but also take traveling exhibits to schools, universities, shopping malls, and all kinds of cultural centers all over the state of Piaui. As a result, we had the creation of Parnaiba city’s Salão de Humor Local. Besides the exhibitions, Jota A., Salão de Humor’s curator, and a cartoonist himself, promotes lectures and courses in local schools as well.
Catalog and Calendar
Salão de Humor has two very dear children: each edition’s catalog with the 200 best drawings, which we send to all 200 artists and local libraries, and also the year’s calendar with the 14 best works from each event. There is steep competition for those two treats.
This is your History too…
Our History couldn’t be written or drawn without each of the approx. 8,000 artists who sent us their work over the last 12 years. To all of you who have joined us, and to all the rest of you who will join us soon, our big, big thank you!
Our curator
Jota A is a cartoonist, visual artist, graphic designer, and wood engraver. A versatile and unquiet soul, Jota idealized Salão de Humor since its creation in 2008, when it was already sponsored by Medplan. Jota has been a cartoonist for 32 years in Piaui’s newspaper O Dia, where he puts out a daily cartoon and a comic strip. He is one of the most prized cartoonists in the world, having collected over 160 prizes in countries such as Brazil, Turkey, and Portugal.
